About Me

James Tsz-Him Cheung is a Manchester-based multimedia artist, violist and composer from Hong Kong, whose works have been showcased at events such as the Klingt Gut Festival in Hamburg, Germany, the Sound and Music Computing Conference in St. Etienne, France, as well as next_generation at ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany, among others.

James is also actively engaging in the software developments of MaxScore, a contemporary multimedia and music notation solution.

In 2022 he co-founded Ladder Creations with Holly Leung, which includes the music ensemble and agency PlayMud, providing clients with live music performances, arrangements and compositions. His arrangements have been performed worldwide by artists like Animenz, Yomii, Serra, Hong Kong Doujin Philharmonia, Strings Amarta, etc.

Inspired by his ethnomusicologist father Stephen Cheung, he started composing in his early years and has developed a particular interest in reviving lost folksongs of Hong Kong’s indigenous groups.

James is currently pursuing Dr.Sc.Mus. in Musicology under Prof. Georg Hajdu, after gaining M.A. Multimedia Composition at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama (HfMT). Before that, he studied and obtained BSc Mathematics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
